  • Yes, any donations made to the Nonesuch Rowing Foundation by UK tax-payers are eligible for Gift Aid, which means that we are able to claim an additional 25p from the Government for every £1 donated, as long as the donor has provided a Gift Aid Declaration.

Donors are able to complete a Gift Aid Declaration at this page.

  • If you donate to The Nonesuch Rowing Foundation via Direct Debit (and can see the name ‘GoCardless’ on your bank statement) and you are switching to a new current account using the Current Account Switch service provided by most UK banks, you do not need to take any further action. • GoCardless is an online direct debit provider used by thousands of businesses and charities to collect regular payments. We use them to collect our regular donations because they are widely trusted and secure and have low fees.

GoCardless do offer the option for us to display a different name on your bank account, however they charge an extra fee for this, which would equate to around £600 a year. To make sure as much of your donation as possible can be used to support rowing in Bristol, we don’t pay this extra fee. This means we have around £600 extra each year which we can put towards our fundraising efforts.

If you want to confirm that a GoCardless payment was for us, you can use their secure payment lookup tool here: https://gocardless.com/payment-lookup

  • “Nonesuch” was the name of UBBC’s first boat, which was itself named after the “Flower of Bristol”; the Nonesuch flower. The UBBC Alumni’s members first raced as Nonesuch Boat Club in 2011, after which Nonesuch has been used more widely as the name to describe UBBC’s group of alumni, supporters, friends and family. This name was therefore chosen to make sure we’re recognisable to our supporters, but our independence from UBBC and the University of Bristol is clear.

  • Since the UBBC Alumni was established as a group in the 1980s, it has engaged in activities which are considered charitable, such as collecting donations and making grants to UBBC to support participation in rowing. However some other activities, such as professional networking, exclusive rowing, and organising drinks and dinners, are not considered charitable.

The incorporation of the Nonesuch Rowing Foundation provides a vehicle for supporters of UBBC to engage in these charitable activities and benefit from the fundraising and tax advantages that come with being a charity, separate to the UBBC Alumni & Friends’ other activities.

The Nonesuch Rowing Foundation was founded by members of the UBBC Alumni & Friends. While the two organisations are independent of each other, we work towards the same fundraising goals and many of the Nonesuch Rowing Foundation’s trustees and committee members also sit on the UBBC Alumni & Friends Committee. It can be easier to think of the Nonesuch Rowing Foundation as the charitable arm of the UBBC Alumni & Friends.

  • If you began donating regularly to the UBBC Alumni from 2017 onwards (and therefore donate monthly via Direct Debit with the name ‘GoCardless’ on your bank statement), we have automatically changed the destination of your monthly donations to the Nonesuch Rowing Foundation - look out for an email with more details. To allow us to claim Gift Aid on your donations, please complete a Gift Aid Declaration.

If you began donating to the UBBC Alumni before 2017 (and therefore donate via standing order), we would encourage you to cancel your standing order and set up recurring donations via Direct Debit to the Nonesuch Rowing Foundation. We are unable to cancel your existing standing order to the UBBC Alumni - you should be able to do this yourself via online banking or in person at your bank’s local branch.
